The Protest Paradigm: Framing of Black Lives Matter movement and Agenda-setting in Czech Media

This diploma thesis deals with the framing of the Black Lives Matter movement and related protests in the Czech news media. The aim of this work is to reveal the way in which the Czech media informed about the Black Lives Matter movement with the help of quantitative content framing analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of social and media construction of reality by Berger and Luckmann, which plays the role of an overarching theory. It also deals with the agenda-setting theory, which it expands with the concept of framing. The agenda-setting theory describes the ability of the mass media to influence the significance of topics in the eyes of the public. The theoretical part also describes a brief history of the Black Lives Matter movement and the events that led to its emergence. Furthermore, the relationship of the mass media to racism is introduced and the concept of the protest paradigm is introduced. The work then describes the previous findings of the protest paradigm, which are then used in the analytical part. The methodological part then presents the research goal, questions and hypotheses, defines the sample set and the research method used, including the characteristics of individual variables. Media Coverage of Rytiri Kladno Ice Hockey Club During Two Extraliga Qualifications

The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze the media coverage of Rytiri Kladno ice hockey club during two extraleague qualifications. The qualitative research is based on concepts of framing and news values. The sample contains four online news websites in two seasons. Three of these websites are parts of large media houses, one of them is focused solely on ice hockey. The aim of this thesis is to describe, how media outputs related to Rytiri Kladno were framed. The frames are described in analytical part, that is concluded with summarization of its findings. Conclusion summarizes the framing analysis results and compares the findings with current academic knowledge of framing and sports journalism in general.
Media Representation of Motherhood in Selected Czech Media

This diploma thesis is focused on a representation of motherhood in the selected Czech media. Motherhood itself and the view on it had changed in 21st century in many ways as shows the recent research. The goal of this thesis is to show how is the topic "motherhood" represented in selected Czech women's magazines and what kind of media construction of this topic are presented to the readers. To reach the goal of this research the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Specifically, the frame analysis and quantitative content analysis. The work begins with the theoretical part which contents the recent concepts of feministic media research, because this thesis is based on the feministic and gender theory perspective. The empirical part of the thesis contents the results of the research. Firstly, the nine frames that had been identified are presented and evaluated than quantitative representation of the frames follow. Finally, there is the evaluation of the quantitative content analysis to which side research questions and hypotheses relate. The results are evaluated and compared with theory and foreign research in the discussion and the final part. The limits of the research and the outline of further possible research in this area are also presented.
Media presentation of FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017

This thesis analyzes the media presentation of Women Basketball 2017 European Championship which was held in the Czech Republic, in the Czech sport online media. The thesis briefly defines framing theory, concept of agenda-setting and news values theory. This paper shows a thumbnail to contemporary sport journalism. Five web sport portals containing basketball agenda are explored by qualitative framing research. The goal of this thesis is to answer how the European championship was presented in the media. The analytical part of the paper describes individual frames including their partial modifications. Conclusion summarizes results gained by the framing analysis.
Media Image of Poverty in Selected Czech Media

anglicky This thesis captures the media image of poverty in the Czech Republic, which is presented in four national daily newspapers on pages dealing with reporting. This work is divided into theoretical part, methodological part and research. The theoretical part deals with media concepts, such as representation of reality, framing, stereotyping, discourse, media image and interconnection issues of poverty and the media. The theoretical part also defines socio- political concepts associated with poverty, their definitions and detailed specification in the context of the Czech Republic. The methodological part defines the used methods, periodicals and investigated research, sample work attaching to the keyword poverty and its variations. Following part is the research, which deals with the quantitative content analysis and qualitative framework analysis, using which corresponds to a set of research questions. The work compares titles with each other, so in total. The conclusion summarizes all the knowledge.
The frame analysis of the Greek financial crisis in the context of 2010 Czech Parliament election in Czech printed media

The thesis examines media interpretation of the Greek financial crisis in selected Czech media. It analyzes framing of this issue in Czech daily newspapers MF DNES, Právo, Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny in period of the first five months of 2010 (1.1 - 28.5.2010). Theoretical part of this thesis is based on Robert Etman's concept of framing, which was defined in early 90's. The main research question is which aspects of the Greek financial crisis were selected, and/or emphasized by Czech media and what interpretations were created using these constructions. The analysis is focused on qualitative research of selected articles using method of grounded theory. With this method it comes to interpretation of the Greek financial crisis in Czech media, detailed understanding of analyzed texts and setting up basic means of framing that are used by journalists. Quantitative analysis is exploring selected population of articles in specific period of time and answering basic research questions (How was crisis framed? How daily newspapers interpretation varied? In which way was the crisis interpreted from the perspective of Czech political scene? How did framing changed in time?).
